Design Stores NYC: The Best of SoHo, Block by Block

The best design stores in SoHo, mapped block by block: 14 verified furniture, lighting, and home shops on Greene, Wooster, Crosby, and Howard Streets.

Interior of a design store with furniture and lighting on display

If you want the best design stores NYC has in one walk, go to SoHo. No American neighborhood packs more serious design retail into fewer blocks: within the quarter square mile south of Houston Street you can sit in a Hans Wegner chair, price a Venetian pendant light, order a custom sofa, and buy a Swiss storage system, all without crossing more than four streets. The fashion flagships on Broadway get the foot traffic. The home and furniture stores one block over are the better reason to come.

This is a retail guide, organized by street, with addresses checked in June 2026. Every store below is open and operating. If you want the other half of the story, how people actually decorate the cast-iron lofts these stores furnish, read our SoHo interior design guide. For shops beyond the neighborhood, our citywide furniture stores guide covers Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Key takeaways

What changed, and why this list is short

SoHo design retail turns over fast, and most guides to it are stale. We dropped every store we could not confirm as currently open at a real address. That cost the list some famous names and a few we liked. What is left is not a directory. It is fourteen stores worth a flight of stairs, each with one honest line on what it is actually for.

Howard and Crosby Streets: the collector’s corner

The southeast edge of SoHo is the quietest and the best. Start here.

Roman and Williams Guild, 53 Howard St. The 7,000-square-foot store from designers Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch occupies a landmark 1857 building and sells their own furniture, lighting, and tabletop, with Emily Thompson’s flower shop inside and the French restaurant La Mercerie through an archway. This is what every lifestyle store since 2017 has been trying to copy. None have.

De Vera, 1 Crosby St. Federico de Vera’s shop of glass, jewelry, antiques, and one-of-a-kind objects, lit and arranged like a private museum. Come for a gift that nobody else at the party will have found.

BDDW, 5 Crosby St. Tyler Hays builds heirloom American hardwood furniture, slab dining tables, beds, and mirrors in bronze frames, priced like the heirlooms they are. The showroom rewards slow looking even if you never buy.

The Citizenry, 22 Crosby St. The flagship for the Texas brand that works directly with artisan workshops worldwide, strongest on textiles, leather, and bedroom goods. The honest entry point on a very expensive corner.

Greene Street: lighting and systems

Greene Street between Canal and Houston reads like a trade fair you can walk into off the cobblestones. This is where designers shop for the parts of a room that are not sofas.

Foscarini Spazio Soho, 20 Greene St. The Venetian lighting house’s New York space, built for its sculptural pendants and table lamps. Go to understand why Italians treat a light fixture as the room’s main event.

USM Modular Furniture, 28-30 Greene St. The Swiss maker of the chrome-and-steel Haller system, the modular shelving you have seen in every architect’s office and gallery back room. Configure a credenza here and it will outlast your next three apartments. Note the showroom is closed Sundays.

Original BTC, 56 Greene St. The British lighting brand known for bone china pendant shades, made in Stoke-on-Trent, on the main floor at this address. The factory aesthetic done with actual factories.

Design Within Reach, 150 Greene St. The licensed source for mid-century classics, Eames, Saarinen, Noguchi, on the ground floor near Houston. The studio was under renovation this spring, so check hours before you walk over.

Wooster Street: the furniture row

One block west, Wooster trades Greene’s systems for full rooms of furniture, with the serious money concentrated at the Houston Street end.

The Shade Store, 77 Wooster St. Custom shades, blinds, and drapery, measured and made to order. Unglamorous and essential: window treatments are the line item every loft renovation underestimates.

Joybird, 83 Wooster St. Made-to-order mid-century-leaning sofas and chairs in a deep fabric library, at prices a first apartment can survive. Sit-test everything; the frames vary more than the photos suggest.

Carl Hansen and Son, 150 Wooster St. The Danish company’s 5,200-square-foot American flagship, opened in 2022, with the full Hans Wegner catalog including the CH24 Wishbone Chair built since 1950. The single best place in New York to learn what good joinery feels like.

Broadway and West Broadway: the volume players

The neighborhood’s two retail spines hold the stores with the widest doors and the friendliest price tags, plus one Italian kitchen specialist.

CB2, 451 Broadway. Crate and Barrel’s modern line in a big two-level store, with a custom upholstery program for sofas and headboards. The reliable first stop for furnishing fast without furnishing badly.

MoMA Design Store, 81 Spring St. The museum’s retail arm between Crosby and Broadway, selling design objects vetted by MoMA curators, from Alvar Aalto vases to whatever clever object will dominate gift guides next December. Best under-$100 shopping on this list.

Scavolini, 429 West Broadway. The Italian kitchen, bath, and closet manufacturer’s SoHo showroom. Only relevant if you are renovating, but if you are, the German brands uptown suddenly have competition.

A walking route that works

The circuit below runs about a mile and a half and takes 90 minutes at a browsing pace. Go on a weekday morning if you can. Saturday afternoons in SoHo are a contact sport.

If the walk leaves you wanting more neighborhood-level intelligence, our neighborhoods guides cover the rest of downtown, and our city living coverage handles the harder question of fitting what you bought into a New York apartment.

Frequently asked questions

Which SoHo street has the best design stores?

Greene and Wooster, and they split the job. Greene Street is strongest for lighting and storage systems, with Foscarini, Original BTC, USM, and Design Within Reach inside five blocks. Wooster is the furniture street, anchored by Carl Hansen and Son near Houston. If you only have 30 minutes, walk Greene from Grand to Houston and cut over.

Are SoHo design stores only for big budgets?

No. The neighborhood runs a full price ladder. The MoMA Design Store and CB2 sell well-designed objects and furniture at mass-market prices, Joybird and The Citizenry hold the middle, and BDDW, De Vera, and Roman and Williams Guild sit at the top. Browsing is free everywhere, and the expensive showrooms are the best free design education in the city.

When is the best time to shop design stores in SoHo?

Weekday mornings, right at opening. You get the showrooms nearly to yourself and actual attention from staff who know the product. Check hours before a Sunday trip: several trade-oriented showrooms, including USM on Greene Street, close that day, and most stores open later than the 10 a.m. fashion flagships.
